Shodoshima is creator Soichiro Yamamoto's home island, and Tonosho turned a corner of its ferry terminal into Takagi-san HQ.

What you're looking at

Teasing Master Takagi-san (2018) is set on Shodoshima in the Seto Inland Sea, where creator Soichiro Yamamoto grew up, in Tonosho. Real sights turn up all over the show: Angel Road appears in the openings of seasons 1 and 3, and so do the Dobuchi Strait and Kashima Myojin Shrine.

Getting there

There's no railway on Shodoshima; you arrive by sea. From Takamatsu Port it's about 60 minutes by ferry or 30 by high-speed boat to Tonosho Port. Ferries also run from Shin-Okayama Port (about 70 minutes) and from Uno via Teshima.

Before you go

  • Start at Tonosho BASE, on the second floor of the Tonosho Port high-speed boat terminal. It's free, with a Takagi-san location map, but there's no staffed desk.
  • Tonosho Junior High is an active school. It's named as Takagi and Nishikata's school and was a location for the 2024 live-action film. Look from the road, and don't photograph students.
  • Book Kotobuki, a location from the live-action drama, is a working bookstore. Buy a book.
  • Goshuin availability varies. Tomioka Hachiman Shrine has offered a Takagi-san goshuin since January 1, 2024. Check with the shrine before you go.

Also nearby

  • Angel Road, the sandbar that links a string of islets at low tide. Check the tide table so you don't get stranded.
  • Dobuchi Strait, listed by Guinness as the world's narrowest strait. You'll cross it on a bridge without noticing.
  • Tomioka Hachiman Shrine, the summer-festival setting in season 2.
