Tamako Market's Shopping Street Is a Real Kyoto Arcade Where People Buy Dinner

What you're looking at

Usagiyama Shopping Street, the cozy arcade at the heart of Tamako Market (2013), is modeled on Demachi Masugata Shopping Street and its surroundings in northern Kyoto. The 2014 sequel film, Tamako Love Story, uses the Kamo River delta nearby for some of its key scenes.

Getting there

Demachiyanagi Station (Keihan Line and Eizan Electric Railway) is about 5 minutes away on foot, across the river. Imadegawa on the Karasuma subway line is about 10 minutes.

Before you go

• This is where locals shop. The arcade has a supermarket, a fishmonger, a florist and a manju shop. Buy something, eat something, and keep the aisle clear.
• It goes quiet at night, when foot traffic drops. That's the neighborhood's evening, not a photo set.
• Shops welcomed fans early, with a fan notebook near the west entrance in 2013. We couldn't confirm it's still there.
• Look up for the mackerel. The giant fish hanging in the arcade was still in Kyoto City's guide in 2025.

• The Kamo River delta (Kamogawa Delta), where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet. Its turtle-shaped stepping stones date from 1993 and appear in key scenes of Tamako Love Story.
• Demachi Futaba, a working wagashi shop on the wider Demachi street, credited for location cooperation on the film and reported as the model for Tamako's family shop. Expect a line, and expect it to be worth it.
• The Kamo Canal near Keihan Fujinomori, where some of the series' riverside walking scenes were drawn.
